Michigan law mandates that every child has the right to be supported by both parents. Federal and Michigan law requires that a child support formula be used to determine the amount of child support that a parent must pay to support his/her children.

Child support is the amount of money that a parent is required to pay in order to help meet the needs of their minor children when they predominately live with the other parent and/or there is a large enough difference in the incomes of the parents that child support is ordered.

Child support can be ordered as part of a divorce, paternity, or custody case and can include medical, dental, child care and/or school expenses.
