Michigan law mandates that every child has the right to be supported by both parents. Federal and Michigan law requires that a child support formula be used to determine the amount of child support that a parent must pay to support his/her children.
Child support is the amount of money that a parent is required to pay in order to help meet the needs of their minor children when they predominately live with the other parent and/or there is a large enough difference in the incomes of the parents that child support is ordered.
Child support can be ordered as part of a divorce, paternity, or custody case and can include medical, dental, child care and/or school expenses.
Most people conclude that custody is most directly connected to the amount of child support a parent is ordered to pay, however, it is really the parenting time schedule that most directly impacts child support.
Considering that child support is so closely tied to parenting time, and parenting time determines how much time you are able to spend with your minor age children, it can be extremely important for you to have an aggressive, compassionate and highly attentive attorney representing you in any legal case that involve the calculation of child support.
