Durable Power of Attorney-Financial

Everyone over the age of 18 who has a bank account and/or has any bills in their name, should have a Durable Power of Attorney.  This can be extremely important because if you have a car accident or suddenly become seriously ill, it may be too late to authorize someone to handle your financial affairs while you get better.  Without your Durable Power of Attorney in place, your family will have to go to Probate Court, pay an expensive filing fee and ask the court permission to handle your financial affairs. You especially should not reach the age of 28 without having your Durable Power of Attorney signed.

Patient Advocate-Medical

It is imperative that everyone adult over the age of 18 have a Patient Advocate!  There have been numerous situations where a parent of a single adult child  has to pay Probate Court fees to open a guardianship case in order to handle the medical affairs of their unmarried adult child.   Having a Patient Advocate allows you to choose who you want to make medical decisions for you when you are unable to!  This is also important because your wishes are followed in the event that serious medical decisions are necessary to be made.
